the experience exchange programme is run
jointly by uspg and the methodist Church
and gives volunteers the chance to share in
the life of a church and community overseas.
placements are found to suit volunteers’
skills and can include teaching, working
on agricultural, health or building projects,
and helping in vocational and rehabilitation
institutions and or children and youth
projects.
status: registered charity.
timing & length of projects: placements are
for six months to a year, with departure dates
dependent on the individual. all volunteers
are required to attend a residential training
week before they go, in either july or january.
destinations: africa and the Indian ocean,
asia and oceania, latin america and the
Caribbean, the middle east and europe.
Costs: the cost depends on the placement,
destination and timing, but all placements
are entirely self-funding. uspg provides a
provisional budget for each placement, along
with fundraising guidance.
eligibility: participants must be at least 18.
acceptance is dependent on a medical
clearance. while volunteers from all
backgrounds can apply, Christian values and
teaching are explored on weekends and
during preparation training.
groups or Individuals: placements are
generally for individuals as they are suited
to the volunteer’s skills and preferences.
however, the programme is flexible enough
to cater for individuals, couples or friends.

selection & Interview process: uspg offers an
exploration weekend in birmingham for those

health advice and a medical clearance prior


to travel. Contacts of local support people are
also provided and regional desk officers in
london also stay in touch.

the ajws Volunteer Corps places american
jewish professionals with grass-roots
organisations effecting social change in
africa, the americas and asia. Volunteers
provide organisations with technical
assistance and skills training in their areas of
professional expertise. other group volunteer
opportunities are also available.
status: non-profit organisation.
timing & length of projects: three to 12
months, with shorter assignments available
for senior professionals. departures are year-
round; there are three application deadlines
each year.
destinations: uganda, south africa, Zambia,
senegal, ghana, guatemala, nicaragua,
honduras, el salvador, peru, mexico, the
dominican republic, thailand and India.
Costs: a return airfare is paid for by the
organisation. Volunteers are responsible for
visas, insurance and immunisations, room
and board and local travel expenses. partial
financial need stipends are available.
eligibility: applicants must be experienced
jewish professionals of any age who are
adventurous, flexible and independent; us
citizenship is required. programmes in the
americas require fluency in spanish.

on their own, but couples can be placed
together.

prospective partner organisations to evaluate
their projects, personnel and capacity to

In-country support: each country has a staff
representative, and a 24-hour emergency
phone line enables volunteers to reach
programme personnel at any time. Volunteers
must contact the home office every two
weeks.

mercy ships is a global charity that has
operated hospital ships in developing nations
since 1978. mercy ships brings hope and
healing to the forgotten poor by mobilising
people and resources worldwide, and serving

condition. all applicants are required to
complete a medical evaluation; some pre-
existing conditions may disqualify service at
certain locations.

a grass-roots network in 15,000 sri lankan
villages, with the aim of development through
self-governance. thousands of projects
focus on social empowerment, disaster
