conservation of, the leatherback sea turtle
nesting population at gandoca beach in the
gandoca-manzanillo national wildlife refuge.
Volunteers can also help protect the hawksbill
turtle in Cahuita.

currently squatters, living on the outskirts of
granada, nicaragua.

this non-profit organisation based in Cusco
is dedicated to providing psychological,
medical and educational services to the
community. Various volunteer roles are
available: administration, radio broadcasting
and website development at hampy’s office,
assisting in the Colibri programme for street
children or teaching in schools. Volunteer
work for professionals in the areas of
psychology, health, education, social work
and legal work is also available with hampy’s
partner organisations.
status: Civil association (not-for-profit).
timing & length of projects: minimum one-
month stay: projects are available all year,
but primary and high schools are closed from
january to march.

destinations: Cusco and the neighbouring
countryside in peru.
Costs: Volunteers must attend a one-week
volunteer workshop which costs us$300. this
includes training in cultural, community and
diversity awareness. Volunteers must fund their
own board and lodging.
eligibility: Volunteers must be enthusiastic and
able to work under pressure.

a wildlife refuge in parque machia, Villa
tunari houses over 200 monkeys, dozens of
birds, tortoises, coatis and wild cats. all were
illegally poached and the refuge’s aim is to
rehabilitate them for re-release into the wild.
Volunteers work hard during the day to clean
the cages, tend sick animals, guide visitors
and in the evenings enjoy the quiet jungle life
with friends from all over the world.
status: grass-roots ngo.
timing & length of projects: all year round;
minimum 15-day stay. Volunteers who wish
to be responsible for a specific animal need
further training and are therefore are required
to stay for a one-month minimum period.
destinations: Villa tunari and parque ambue
ari, both in bolivia.
Costs: us$158 to us$190 for the first 15 days,
then us$6.50 to us$8 per day. this includes
accommodation. at parque ambue ari the
first 15 days costs us$200, then us$9 a day.
this includes food.
eligibility: minimum age is 18 years. families
are welcome. all volunteers must have a big
heart and be willing to work hard to save the
animals.

in 2004 to support underprivileged children.
It has been able to place about 30 children
from its school into different government and
private schools within its neighborhood.

girls, of which 60% live in sprawling slums. a
sister project called the rainbow home needs
volunteers to assist in looking after the 150
rainbow children who are orphans, homeless
or very deprived.
