Thanks From the Authors

From Charlotte
I would like to thank my commissioning editor, Bridget Blair, for being so collaborative
about the nature of this book and for being so lovely to work with. I’d also like to thank:
all the returned volunteers whose words I have poured over endlessly (I even feel I know
the ones I haven’t met); our Special Advisors who gave up their time to meet me, help with
the brief and who I’d call day or night with some thorny volunteering question that needed
answering straight away; Jez Sweetland who offered invaluable advice about the charitable
sector; David Orkin who checked the travel information in Chapter Three; John Masterson
of Trailfinders who checked the visa section; and my husband, Simon, who took the girls
to school as frequently as he could so I could get on and write.

From Nate
I'd like to dedicate my work to my love Florence Chien, and thank her for bottomless re-
serves of patience, a ruthless eye for unnecessary verbiage, and the ability to bring me back
to normal after a long day of being cooped up in my office. I'd also have been completely
awash without the help of co-authors Korina Miller and Charlotte Hindle and commis-
sioning editor Bridget Blair. For the advice I'd like to thank John Ruiz, Matt Cavalieri and
Matt Meuller. For the support, I'd like to thank Rob Harvilla, Garrett Kamps, Tommy
Craggs, Matt Palmquist, Joe Hayes, Vanessa Kong, Cory Mescon, Ben Baumer and last but
hardly least, Danny Palmerlee, who inspired me to work for Lonely Planet with his excel-
lent Baja guide and kind advice.

From Rachel
My big thank you goes to all the independent volunteers who have shared their stories
with me and to the grass-roots charities and online directories for answering my questions.
I am delighted that the book has received such a positive response. I am also very grateful
to Charlotte Hindle for her support and advice.

From Korina
A big thank-you to Bridget Blair for including me in this challenging but very rewarding
project. Also thanks to Charlotte Hindle and my co-authors, particularly Nate Cavalieri
for his 'team spirit'. Special thanks to the countless organisations and volunteers who gave
me their time, shared their insight and answered my unending questions; extra thanks to
Anna Demant, Katherine Tubb, Alex Tarrant, Penelope Worsley, Catheryn Goodyer, Len-
nox McNeely, Kalene Caffarella, Anthony Lunch, the Teach Ghana Trust, Seattle Univer-
sity's Calcutta Club (particularly Lucas McIntyre), Matt & Polly Freer, Peggy Fussell, Katie
Yewdall, Eileen Bennicke and Clare Wearden. To Billy Castillo, Ronit Shafran and Giles
Gailer, gracias para la traducción. And to Mike Wilson (my own personal Diane Arbus),
thanks for the photo. Thanks and love to Paul, king of humorous titles, and to Simone just
for being Simone.
