the aYad programme places young
australians aged 18 to 30 on medium-term
assignments (of between three to 12 months)
in developing countries throughout asia, the
pacific and africa. aYad volunteers work with
local counterparts in host organisations to
achieve sustainable development outcomes
through capacity building, skills transfer and
institutional strengthening. aYad assignments
cover a diverse range of sectors including
education, environment, gender, governance,
health, infrastructure, rural development and
trades.
status: aYad is an ausaId project managed
by austraining International pty ltd.
timing & length of assignments: aYad
assignments are advertised three times per
year across three intakes which are mobilised
in march, july and october. assignments are
three to 12 months in duration.
destinations: bangladesh, Cambodia, China,
east timor, fiji, ghana, Indonesia, thailand,
laos, the maldives, mongolia, myanmar
(burma), nepal, papua new guinea, the
philippines, samoa, the solomon Islands, sri
lanka, tonga, Vanuatu and Vietnam.


Costs/pay: the aYad programme covers
the cost of airfares, medical expenses, visas
and insurance. when in-country, volunteers
receive a locally applicable living allowance to
cover accommodation and other costs (from
a$1000 a month). upon return a resettlement
allowance is paid. special grants for suitable
clothing are given to those going to extremely
cold places in winter.
eligibility: aYads must be between the ages
of 18 and 30 at the time of applying and must
be australian citizens.
groups or Individuals: mainly individuals,
with some couples applying for separate
assignments. aYads work alone but are briefed
and mobilised in groups, and there is generally
a number of them in an area at any one time.

apply for a specific position related to their
skills and experience. the aYad program
has a staged selection process. the selection
process is based on merit and aYad works
within the parameters of the australian equal
opportunities act. for further information about

website. all shortlisted candidates will be
interviewed.
In-country support: aYads and host
organisations are supported in country by
an In Country manager (ICm). the ICm is
an aYad programme staff member who
lives in that country, often in the capital city.
each country has its own ICm. when aYads
arrive in country the ICm will run an In-
country orientation program. the In-country
orientation program includes information
about the culture and history of the host
country, banking, shopping, taking public
transport, health and security issues. the ICm
also helps volunteers find safe, affordable
and appropriate accommodation, source
appropriate language training and secure
appropriate visas. If any issues arise while
an aYad is on assignment (both personal
and professional), the ICm is the first point
of contact.

though tracking lions, identifying snakes
and learning how to survive in the bush
might not be everyone’s ideal assignment,
this organisation (based on a ‘big four’
private game reserve in south africa)
gives students personal development
opportunities and a broader outlook on
the world of wildlife conservation. Choose
from a variety of placement durations (four,
six, eight or 10 weeks). at the end of the
experience participants receive a certificate in
conservation competency.
status: limited company.
timing & length of placements: the 10-week
placements start at the begining of january,
april, july and september. It also offers four-,
six- and eight-week options that are more
programme specific.
destinations: Kwa madwala private
game reserve in south africa, located
south of Kruger national park close to the
mozambique and swaziland borders.
Costs: a four-week placement with Kwa
madwala costs £1699; a six-week placement
costs £2299; an eight-week placement
costs £2699; and a 10-week placement
costs £3499. this includes accommodation,
meals, activities, entry fees, specialised
courses and transfers from KmIa International
airport. It does not include international
flights, insurance or airport transfers from
johannesburg.
eligibility: open to anyone aged over 17. You
need to be fit, healthy and able to work in a
team; placements are ‘not for the faint-
hearted’.

formerly known as the save the earth
network, this organisation renamed itself in
the hope of bringing more internet keyword
exposure to its programmes promoting
environmental preservation, sustainable
development, international cultural exchange,
solidarity and friendship through voluntary
work placements and host family homestays in
ghana. working four days a week, volunteers
help teach children english or maths, care
for orphans or abandoned children, educate
people about aIds, help with reforestation or
work in healthcare clinics and hospitals.
status: not-for-profit organisation.
timing & length of placements: placements
are from two to 12 weeks and you can join
year-round.
destination: ghana.
Costs: prices start at £397 for one to four
weeks. a 12-week stay costs £1197. prices
include accommodation and food.
eligibility: people from 16 to 60 without special
skills, qualifications or experience may
volunteer with all except the healthcare
programmes (and a few other programmes).

in pairs, and will usually work in a group of

service opportunities with structured
classes in a wide variety of subject areas,
including language and culture. For
