working across all continents, Vap’s
standard workcamps bring together a group
of international volunteers from different
backgrounds to undertake unskilled tasks that
would otherwise be impossible without paid
labour. these can range from construction
work on public buildings, to environmental
conservation, to social projects involving
children, the elderly or refugees. a main goal
is to promote intercultural understanding
between participants and the local
community. Vap’s north–south workcamps
take place in developing countries, involve
larger groups with many local participants
and focus as much on cross-cultural
cooperation as on practical work.
status: registered charity.
timing & length of projects: most placements
are between two and four weeks, although
there is the possibility for longer-term
placements of three to 12 months. the
majority of placements are between june and
september but can take place year-round.
destinations: 80 countries, including Kenya,
burundi, peru, Italy, palestine, mexico,
Zambia, portugal, argentina, Vietnam and
france.
Costs: standard programme workcamps
(projects in europe, north america, japan,
south Korea and taiwan) cost £150, including
food and accommodation. north–south
programme workcamps (africa, latin america
and other asian countries) cost £180 plus
a £150 to £200 hosting fee for food and
accommodation. all travel and personal
expenses are borne by the volunteer.
eligibility: the minimum age is 18 on most
projects; there are a few projects open to
15 to 17 year olds, though. some projects
have a maximum age of 30. no skills or
experience are required, but it’s preferable
that volunteers on north–south projects
have previous experience volunteering in a
workcamp setting.
groups or Individuals: Volunteers are placed
in workcamps of five to 25 participants. It is
preferable that participants are individuals,
although for larger projects, partners and
friends can apply together. In such cases,
these participants must make every effort to
integrate into the group.
