Shazam!
After a mysterious wizard (Djimon Hounsou)
bestows powers on 14-year-old foster child
Billy Batson (Asher Angel), the latter finds
that he can turn into a powerful superhero
resembling a costumed, muscular adult
man (Zachary Levi) just by uttering the word
“Shazam”. However, the villainous Dr. Sivana
(Mark Strong) is on the hunt for the new
superhero’s powers.
FIVE FACTS:
- The film is based on the DC Comics
character known as Shazam – or as he has
alternatively been called since his creation in
1939, Captain Marvel. - This Captain Marvel is not to be confused
with the superhero of the same name
owned by DC’s main rival in the comic book
space, Marvel Comics. - New Line, one of the production companies
behind the film, started developing a
live-action Shazam film in the early 2000s,
but progress was repeatedly interrupted. - Although Dwayne Johnson was once
considered for the title role, it was later
decided that he would instead play one
of the hero’s adversaries, Black Adam, in a
separate film. - The movie has drawn positive reviews,
with much praise particularly for the
comedic tone.
