hotel’s park-like atmosphere is the highlight

here, but it’s such a hike from town that, un-

less you came with your own transportation,

it’s diffi cult to recommend.

The street just south of the New Market has

a number of inexpensive food stalls (meals

from K1000; h6.30am-5pm). At night this strip

also functions as Taunggyi’s night market

(h6-10pm) serving shan kauq-sweh (Shan

noodle soup) and other local staples.

Shan Restaurant SHAN $

(off Bogyoke Aung San Rd; mains from K500;

hbreakfast & lunch) This open-air place serves

yummy Shan treats such as khao som (sour

rice with a garlic oil topping) and kauq-

sweh kai (Shan-style chicken noodle soup).

There’s no English-language sign here;
