Sunflower Hotel HOTEL $
(Map p 46 ; %240 014; http://www.myanmarsunflower
-hotel.com; 259-263 Anawrahta Rd; r $6-22;a)
Located in the heart of the busy Indian
quarter. The cheapest rooms are little
more than fan-cooled closets with shared
bathroom, while the corner suites are quite
spacious and airy with great city views.
Daddy’s Home HOTEL $
(Map p 46 ; %252 169; daddyhomehotel@gmail.
com; 107 Kon Zay Dan St; r $12, with shared bath-
room $6) A drab tower-block hotel with the
largest bathrooms in the budget category.
The cleaners need to purchase a broom,
but otherwise it’s friendly and adequate.
Kon Zay Dan St is located between 26th
St and 27th St.
OUTSIDE CIT Y CENTRE
The suburbs are generally quieter than
central Yangon. They’re also convenient
for walking to Shwedagon Paya and Kan-
dawgyi Lake, but are not great for budget
accommodation.
Classique Inn BOUTIQUE HOTEL $$
(Map p 48 ; %525 557; http://www.classique-inn.com; 53B
Golden Valley Rd; r $40-60; aiW) Located in a
villa in Yangon’s posh Golden Valley neigh-
bourhood, this leafy, family-run place off ers
eight cosy, attractive rooms. The rates aren’t
exactly a steal, particularly for the rather
tight ground-fl oor single rooms, and you’ll
need taxis to get around town, but warm
service (including travel arrangements),
good breakfast and a homey atmosphere
make up for this.
Savoy Hotel BOUTIQUE HOTEL $$$
(Map p 48 ; %526 289; http://www.savoy-myanmar.com;
129 Dhama Zedi Rd; s $90, d $95, ste $125-135; ai
Ws) Everything inside the Savoy is done so
well it’s easy to forgive the fact that it’s situ-
ated on a busy street corner. Hallways, rooms
and even the lavish bathrooms are stocked
with photographs, antiques, handicrafts and
sculptures, and it takes little imagination to
feel as if you are some Raj-like king. Basically
what you get at this Myanmar-German joint
venture is Strand Hotel standards without
the price tag.
Alamanda Inn BOUTIQUE HOTEL $$$
(Map p 48 ; %534 513; [email protected];
60B Shwe Taung Gyar Rd/Golden Valley Rd; r $60-
65; ai) Yet another colonial-villa-turned-
B&B in the quiet, leafy embassy district. The
French-run Alamanda hotel combines fi ve
spacious and attractively decorated rooms,
the most expensive of which is the suite
in the old servants’ quarters with its own
private garden. The French-style breakfast
gets good reports and there’s an excellent at-
tached French restaurant and bar (see p 62 ).
Winner Inn BUDGET HOTEL $$
(Map p 48 ; %535 205; http://www.winnerinnmyanmar.
com; 42 Than Lwin Rd; r $20-30, ste $35; ai) If
it weren’t for its somewhat remote location,
the Winner would be one of our faves. This
low-slung building is in a quiet, leafy sub-
urb and has spotless rooms with desks, and
pictures on the walls. The communal areas
have plenty of well-positioned chairs wait-
ing for you to collapse into with a book.
Sedona Hotel BUSINESS HOTEL $$$
(Map p 48 ; %666 900; http://www.sedonasmyanmar.
com; 1 Kaba Aye Pagoda Rd; r $100-160, ste $350-
900; aiWs) You know exactly what you’ll
be getting at the Singapore-owned Sedona:
peace, quiet and very professional service.
What you won’t be getting is any indication
you’re in Myanmar, but as you sink into one
of the comfortable beds, you probably won’t
be that bothered.
Summit Parkview BUSINESS HOTEL $$$
(Map p 48 ; %211 888; http://www.summityangon.com; 350
Ahlone Rd; r $65-70, ste $95-100; ai Ws) How
many hotels do you know of with breathtak-
ing views over one of the wonders of the
universe? If a bargain-rated, orderly and ci-
vilised room overlooking the jewel-encrusted
Shwedagon Paya isn’t for you, feel free to
take the same type of room overlooking the
pool (open to nonguests for $5 per day).
Guest Care Hotel HOTEL $$
(Map p 48 ; %511 118; http://www.guestcarehotel.com; 107
Dhama Zedi Rd; r $20-22, ste $32; aiW) There
are several classes of room here (with little
noticeable diff erence between them), and
it’s worth taking a look at a few before com-
mitting, as some are in much better nick
than others. For character you’ll fi nd a few
bits of beautifully carved wooden furniture
tossed about the place.
Comfort Inn BUDGET HOTEL $$
(Map p 48 ; %525 781; http://www.comfyland.biz; 4 Shweli
Rd; s/d $15/25;a) A family-run guesthouse
on a side street close to the Bangladeshi
embassy and within walking distance of the
Shwedagon Paya. The wood-panelled rooms
are decent enough, but do little to set the
imagination alight. The tens of caged birds,
