The Walk » Retrace your path on 14th St and
continue, crossing over the highway. When you
reach G St, take a left. Eventually, this will cross
H St, where a right takes you to a trailhead of the
Arcata Marsh.
Arcata Marsh &
Wildlife Sanctuary
On the shores of Humboldt Bay, the
Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary
has 5 miles of walking trails and
outstanding bird-watching – during
sunset it can be arrestingly beautiful –
particularly when you consider that
it was once the site of lumber mills
and that the water originates at
Arcata’s water treatment system. Two
organizations – Redwood Region
Audubon Society (www.rras.org; donation
welcome) and Arcata Marsh Interpretive
Center (%707-826-2359; 569 South G St; tours
free; (^) %9am-5pm) – offer guided walks.
The Walk » Trails through the marshes will
bring you to a colorful array of migratory and
shore birds. Exit the marsh on I St, take a quick left
on Samoa Blvd and then a right on J St.
Finnish Country
Sauna & Tubs
The private, open-air redwood tubs at the
Finnish Country Sauna & Tubs (%707-822-
2228; http://www.cafemokkaarcata.com; cnr 5th & J Sts;
hnoon-11pm Sun-Thu, to 1am Fri & Sat) make
an ideal place to rest your legs. The tubs
(half-hour/hour $9/17) and sauna are
situated around a frog pond, and birds
flutter in the redwood branches above.
The attached coffee house has a mellow,
old-world vibe.
The Walk » Continue north on J Street and take
a right at 8th to reach the Plaza.
Jacoby’s Storehouse
The final stop returns to another
corner of Arcata Plaza and another
National Historic Landmark, Jacoby’s
Storehouse (cnr H & 8th Sts). The creaking
halls of this 1857 mercantile building
have received a handsome upgrade and
now lead to restaurants, some tasteful
history displays and – importantly for
any traveling stop – an ice-cream parlor.
