A10) to enjoy exquisite

views any time of year.

By the time you reach

Bunny Flat (6860ft) you’ll

be gasping at the sights

(and the thin air), but if

the road is clear of snow

continue the ascent for

more amazing views.

You’ll see Lassen Peak

to the south. Look west

for a bird’s-eye preview

of the rest of this trip,

towards Mt Eddy and

Marble Mountains and

the green hills along the

scenic Trinity Byway.

The Drive » Follow Everitt

Memorial Hwy back down the

hill. It’ll take about 30 minutes

to get down to Mt Shasta Village,

a new-agey village that’s worth a

look. Go south 8 miles on I-5 and

exit at Dunsmuir.

2 Shasta Lake

The largest reservoir

in California, Shasta

Lake (www.shastalake.com)

has the state’s biggest

population of bald eagles,

an endless network of

hiking trails, and great

fishing. On the north

side, stop to tour the

crystalline caves of the

Lake Shasta Caverns

(www.lakeshastacaverns.

Tours include a boat ride

that’s great for families

(bring a sweater – it’s

chilly down there!). The

Shasta Dam visitors

center (h8:30am-4:30pm)

to the south has maps

of hiking trails and a

picture-window view of

the monstrous Shasta

Dam. The colossal,

15-million-ton dam is

second only in size to

Hoover Dam in Nevada;

its 487ft spillway is

as high as a 60-story
