The Walk » Farther northeast along Cañon

block southeast, turning right onto De La Guerra St.

Embracing a romantic cloistered

Spanish-style adobe courtyard, this

peaceful little museum (%805-966-1601;

http://www.santabarbaramuseum.com; 136 E De La

Guerra St; admission by donation; h10am-5pm

Tue-Sat, noon-5pm Sun) has an interesting

collection of local memorabilia,

ranging from the simply beautiful,

such as Chumash woven baskets and

colonial-era textiles, to the simply odd,

like an intricately carved coffer that

belonged to missionary Junípero Serra.

The Walk » Keep walking southwest on De La

Guerra St, crossing Anacapa St. Casa de la Guerra

stands on the northwest side of the block.

Casa de la Guerra

Your admission ticket to El Presidio de

Santa Barbara also includes entry to

Casa de la Guerra (%805-965-0093; http://www.

sbthp.org; 15 E De La Guerra St; adult/child $5/free;

hnoon-4pm Sat & Sun), a grand 18th-century

colonial home with Spanish, Mexican and

American heritage exhibits. Authentically

restored, this whitewashed adobe with

red-tiled roofs was an architectural model

for rebuilding all of downtown after a

devastating 1925 earthquake.

The Walk » Continue walking southwest,

crossing State St over to the Paseo Nuevo

shopping mall. Head northwest four blocks to

Anapamu St and turn left.

Karpeles Manuscript Library

Stuffed with historical written artifacts,

this museum (%805-962-5322; http://www.rain.

org/~karpeles; 21 W Anapamu St; hnoon-4pm

Wed-Sun) is an embarrassment of riches for

history nerds, science geeks, and literary

and music lovers. Traveling exhibits often

spotlight literary masterworks, from

Shakespeare’s to Sherlock Holmes.
