coveted permits
(assigned by advance
lottery) are your only
passport to the summit,
though drop-in day-
trippers can swan up the
mountain as far as Lone
Pine Lake – about 6 miles
round-trip – to kick up
some dust on the iconic
Whitney Trail. Near
