connect to the Pacific
Crest Trail. The most
scenic hike in the area is
the Haskell Peak Trail,
which affords views of
both Lassen and Shasta
and, on a clear day, Mt
Rose in Nevada. To reach
the trailhead, turn right
from Gold Lake Hwy at
Haskell Peak Rd (Forest
Rd 9) and follow it for
8.5 miles. The hike is
only 3 miles, but it’s not
for the faint of heart –
you’ll climb some 1000ft
through dense forest
before it opens on an
expansive view. From
here you can see the
rugged Sierra Buttes,
distinguished from their
surrounding mountains
by jagged peaks, which
look like a miniature
version of the Alps.

The Drive » Gold Lake Hwy
will now descend and connect
to Hwy 49 in Bassetts (a town
that consists of little more than
a gas station). Go right on Hwy
49 for five minutes to reach
Sierra City.
