Leading contemporary Greek writers in translation include Ersi
Sotiropoulou, who wrote the acclaimed 1999 Zigzagging Through the
Bitter Orange Trees, Thanassis Valtinos, Rhea Galanaki, Ziranna Ziteli
and Ioanna Karystiani, who also wrote the screenplays forBrides and
With Heart and Soul.
Kedros’ modern literature translation series includes Dido Sotiriou’s
Farewell Anatolia, Maro Douka’sFool’s Goddand Kostas Mourselas’
bestsellingRed-Dyed Hair, later made into a popular TV series.
The current cosmopolitan generation of authors is taking a global
approach. After his well-received novelThe Maze, Panos Karnezis
bypassed the translation issue by writingThe Birthday Party in
English, while best-selling author Soti Triandafyllou, also wrote Poor
Margo, in English.
Alexis Stamatis represents a new generation of authors basing
their stories outside Greece, with Bar Flaubert and American
Fugue. Other contemporary voices include author and newspaper
columnist Amanda Mihalakopoulou and Vangelis Hatziyiannidis,
author of award-winning Four Walls and Stolen Time.
