1 Calicoon
Calicoon was settled in the
1760s when lumbering was
all the rage; the railroad,
which still runs through
this postage-stamp-sized
town, linked the Great
Lakes to the eastern
seaboard a century later.
Today Calicoon is a mix
of year-round residents
and second-homers,
rural rhythms and
independently minded
retirees, artists and
farmers. Built in the 1940s,
the Calicoon movie theater
has daily 7:30pm showings
(plus another screening
at 2pm on weekends),
generally Hollywood
blockbusters, in its single-
screen cavernous Quonset-
hut style theater. Throw in
a sophisticated wine shop,
several antiques stores and
restaurants, including the
newly redesigned Peppino’s
Pizzeria and Cafe Devine,
where you can while away
a few hours, and a farmer’s
market on Sundays
(h11am to 3pm) in the
summer and you might
start window-shopping at
the local real-estate office.
