(Darren Dugan) #1
1 Snow Hill
Attractive Snow Hill, a
village of a little over 2000
people, sits on the banks
of the Pocomoke River. It’s
a postcard-perfect slice
of Americana, with its
antique shops, cafes and
brick buildings, all arrayed
in loose grid around a
town hall and a church.
Located in a little house
that itself resembles a set
piece from a historical
movie, the Julia A Purnell
Museum (%410-632-0515;
208 W Market St; adult/child
$2/50¢; h10am-4pm Tue-Sat,
from 1pm Sun Apr-Oct) is a
veritable attic of all things
Snow Hill. The attraction
isn’t so much the exhibits
as the town’s obvious
pride in them.

About 3.5 miles outside
of town, Pocomoke River
State Park (%410-632-
2566; 3461 Worcester Highway;
hsunrise to sunset; c#),
part of the 15,000-acre
Pocomoke State Forest,
is an exquisite state
park, especially for kids.
There are trails, paddling
opportunities, wetlands,
woods, a nature center
and a pool ($6 for day
use).
Show Hill is almost
equidistant (two hours
and 45 minutes) from
Washington DC and
Baltimore.

The Drive » Drive north on
US 113, through a patchwork of
cornfields, woodsy groves and
flower banks, for 20 miles until
you see signs for Berlin.

2 Berlin
There’s a red-brick
stateliness to Berlin’s
town center that is quite
compelling to travelers,
and we’re not the first
people to notice. The films
Runaway Bride and Tuck
Everlasting both used
Berlin as their stand-
in for a quintessential
American small town.
So, what is there to do?
Potter about, browse the
ubiquitous antique shops,
or hit the local farmers
market on Friday (200 Main
St, h10am to 3pm). Or check
out a show at the local
Globe Theater (%410-641-
0784; http://www.globetheater.com;
12 Broad St; lunch mains $6-12,
dinner $11-25; h11am-10pm;
W), a dinner theater-cum-
bar with excellent nosh
and a packed performance
schedule that’s always
good for a date night.

The Drive » Take US 50
westbound from Berlin for about
20 miles til you hit the outskirts
of Salisbury, MD. Merge onto the
ramp towards US 13 north and
follow that for about 8 miles,
then turn left onto Bi State Rd.
Follow Bi State for 8 miles until
you hit Laurel.

3 Laurel
Laurel, the first town
you’ll come to in Delaware,
is...well, it’s nice. There’s
not a lot to do besides
walk around and soak up
the vibe. We like vibe.
