3 Western Shore,
Cayuga Lake
Trumansburg, a one-street
town about 15 miles north
of Ithaca, is the gateway to
Taughannock Falls State
Park (%607-387-6739; http://www.
nysparks.com; 2221 Taughannock
Rd, Trumansburg). At 215ft,
the falls of the same name
are 30ft higher than
Niagara Falls. There are
5 miles of hiking trails,
most of which wind their
way around the slippery
parts to bring you safely
to the lookout spots at the
top. One trail follows the
stream bed to the falls.
A little further along
on Rte 89, near the village
of Interlaken, is the
Creamery (h11am-8pm), a
roadside restaurant that,
in addition to ice-cream
sundaes, serves buzz-
inducing wine-infused
sorbets. Just past here
is Lucas Vineyards
(%607-532-4825; http://www.
lucasvineyards.com; 3862
County Rd 150, Interlaken;
h10:30am-5:30pm), one of
the pioneers of Cayuga
wineries. A little further
north, by the lake shore
and a small community
of modest but charming
summer homes, is
Sheldrake Point Winery
(%607-532-9401; http://www.
sheldrakepoint.com; 7448
County Rd; h11am-5pm

wide lawn surrounded by
gnarly roots and rioting
wildflowers; you can
look out over the trellis-
covered vineyards while
sampling homemade
wines, grappas and
limoncellos.

Cayuga Lake State Park, which

turn left onto County Rd 116 east.
4 Seneca Falls
This small, sleepy town
is where the country’s
organized women’s rights
movement was born.
After being excluded
from an anti-slavery
meeting, Elizabeth
Cady Stanton and her
friends drafted an 1848
declaration asserting
that ‘all men and women
are created equal.’ The
inspirational Women’s
Rights National
Historical Park (%315-
568-2991; http://www.nps.gov/
wori; 136 Fall St; h9am-5pm)
F has a small but
impressive museum with
an informative film, plus
a visitor center offering
tours of Cady Stanton’s
house. The surprisingly
tiny National Women’s
Hall of Fame (%315-568-
8060; http://www.greatwomen.org;
76 Fall St; adult/child $3/free;
h10am-4pm Wed-Sat year
round, from noon Sun Jun-Aug)
honors American women
such as First Lady
Abigail Adams, American
Red Cross founder Clara
Barton and civil-rights
activist Rosa Parks.

The Drive » The 10 miles
on NY-20 west to Geneva
passes through strip mall-lined
Waterloo; Mac’s Drive-In, a
classic 1950s-style burger joint,
is worth a stop.
Only a few miles northeast of Ithaca is Cornell
University’s Sapsucker Woods (%800-843-2473; http://www.
birds.cornell.edu; 159 Sapsucker Woods Rd), a bird-feeding
garden and 10-acre pond full of ducks, geese and
other wildlife. The 4 miles of trails, open from dawn
to dusk, are teeming with birds and butterflies. Also
look out for Stone Egg, a huge cairn built from local
stone by internationally acclaimed environmental
artist Andy Goldsworthy and students from Cornell.
