1 Oswego
The port town of Oswego
is home to an old
lighthouse that’s open
to the public and is just
waiting to be explored – it
involves a walk along a
lengthy breakwater that
juts well into the sea.
An easier approach to
Oswego West Pierhead
Lighthouse (h1-5pm Sep-
Jun, 10am-5pm Jul & Aug; adult/
child $7/3) is to take in its
delicate silhouette in the
distance as you stroll the
historic waterfront that’s
backed by gorgeous resort
homes, including the
Richardson-Bates House
Museum (%315-343-1342;
http://www.rbhousemuseum.org; 135
E Third St; adult/child $5/2;
h1-5pm Thu-Sat Apr-Dec; c),
an Italian villa built by a
wealthy family in the late
1800s.
At the end of the town’s
main pier, you’ll find
the H Lee White Marine
Museum (%315-342-0480;
http://www.hleewhitemarinemuseum.
com; 1 W 1st St; adult/child $7/3;
h1-5pm Sep-Jun, 10am-5pm Jul
& Aug; c), full of detailed
information about the
Pierhead Lighthouse.
While you meander across
the salt-flecked stones –
courtesy of the brackish
water in these parts –
take note of the tugboat
moored at the pier; it
served in the Normandy
invasion in WWII.
