A handful of teams trailed
Rockford senior CJ Stephan
and Forest hills Northern
junior Jack Zubkus as they
played one playoff hole, and
then another, and another ...
at Milham Park Golf Course
in Kalamazoo Tuesday after-
noon.
Caledonia’s varsity boys’
golf team wasn’t one of
them. The Fighting Scots had
already seen Stephan and the
Rockford Rams do enough
winning in the OK Red
Conference this spring, and
the season had already come

to an end for the Fighting
Scots.
The Caledonia boys fin-
ished eighth in the 19-team
field at the Division 1
Regional Tournament hosted
by Loy Norrix High School.
Scot sophomore Jacob
Byanski led his team, shoot-
ing a 78, which left him three
strokes back of the final indi-
vidual state qualifiers from
the event.
The top three teams and
top three individuals not on
those teams at Tuesday’s
regional earned spots in the
Division 1 Lower Peninsula
State Finals which will be
held June 11-12 at Forest
Akers West Golf Course on
the campus of Michigan
State University in East
Lansing.
The playoff between
Stephan and Zubkus was just
to determine the day’s med-

alist honors. Both guys fin-
ished 18 holes at an even-
par-72. Stephan wound up
winning the team regional
championship with his
Rockford teammates and the
individual regional title as
well, parring the par-3 num-
ber 13, the fifth playoff hole,
while Zubkus had to settle
for a bogey.
Rockford won the regional
championship with a team
score of 295, ahead of Forest
Hills Northern 309, Portage
Northern 311, Mona Shores
312, Hudsonville 314, Forest
Hills Central 315, Grandville
319, Caledonia 323, Portage
Central 323 and Mattawan
328 in the top ten at the
event.
Rockford had four guys
among the top seven individ-
ually, with junior Ty
Marchiewski third with a 73
and seniors Oliver Haeberle

and Joshua Poot tying a few
others for seventh with 75s.
Senior Tyler Gillespie
from Forest Hills Northern
and Forest Hills Central
junior Joe Murdock finished
as the last two of the five
regional medalists, each
shooting a 74.
Murdock was tops among
the three individual state
qualifiers, with Mona Shores’
Nicholas Taylor and
Hudsonville’s Foster Faber
both shooting a 75 to earn
their spots in the state finals.
Behind Byanski for the
Scots, Senior Alex Roe and
junior Landon Wanless each
scored an 81. Senior Bryce
Fleisher scored an 83 and
senior JT Schwartz finished
his day with a 94. Roe and
Wanless tied for 30th overall.
