Dhows are distinguished by their triangular lateen sails, and once plied trade routes that helped make Zanzibar rich``````The Golden Gate Bridge is painted International Orange, though in the ’30s the US Navy wanted black and yellow stripes``````Andreas Stavroulopoulos is anengineer and keen photographer``````After exploring Tanzania’smagnificent national parks,my wife and I spent fourdays relaxing in historicZanzibar City. Strolling thewaterfront one afternoon,I was on the lookout for thedistincively shaped dhowsthat have sailed the IndianOcean for millennia. Whenone appeared during sunset,it was more than I could’vewished for. After days ofunmemorable snaps, at lastI got a strong photo – withthe textured sail, historicvessel and romantic sunsetcombining to bring themoment right back to life.ZANZIBAR, TANZANIAUp for sailJustice King is an English and biologystudent at Queen's University, Ontario``````I rode my bike through theMarin Headlands to finda quiet spot to enjoy thescenery. The area is usuallyfilled with tourists duringthe day but it isn’t crowdedat dusk. I decided to takeadvantage of the quiet andcontinue on through theHeadlands. I found myselfin the clouds, completelyalone and undisturbed, looking down at the GoldenGate Bridge from 270metres up. Each time I’m inSan Francisco, I return hereto escape the crowds andappreciate the beauty of theGolden City from above.SAN FRANCISCO, USAGo for gold12 Lonely Planet Traveller October 2017
