Oh Crap! Potty Training

(Barry) #1

CHAPTER 3

Myths and Misconceptions

Okay, so we’re clear on when to potty train. Now I’d like to talk

about some common myths and misconceptions—some widely held
beliefs you may have heard or read. Some are so common, they’ve
almost become law. They’ve infiltrated day cares, playgrounds, and
community centers. Some are convenient sound bites that I often
read or hear about. I’m going to deconstruct them here, so we can get
logical about all of this.
Warning: You may need to use some common sense here, so be
prepared.
Take a moment to think about whether these statements are true
or false:

  1. It’s best to wait until your child gives you signals.

  2. Boys are harder to train than girls are.

  3. It’s easier to train for pee first, then tackle poop.

  4. You should put the potty chair out before you start training so your child can get
    used to it.
