Gather thesematerials:Dilutenitricacid(HN0 3 ) ;chlorideoflime(CaOCI 2 ) ;

water;3 smalljars;a glassstirringrod;andscrapsofdiscardedcoloredcotton

cloth.

Follow thisprocedure:LabelthethreejarsA,BandC. Fill allofthemtfull

ofplainwater.TojarA,add-tofa testtubeofdilutenitricacid. TojarB,add

tofa testtubeofdrychlorideoflime.CAUTION:Donottoucheitherofthese

chemicalswithyourhands.Ifanyofthenitricacid orchlorideoflimetouches

yourskin, wash itimmediatelywithplentyofwater.

Don'tputanythingin thewaterinjarC. Stir thecontentsofjarsAandB

thoroughlywiththe glassrod.Nowdip a pieceofcoloredclothintojarA,and
swirl itaroundwith the glassrod.Usingthesamerod,removethecloth,and
holdingit abovethejar,let itdripfor aminute.Whenmostofthe excessliquid
drainsoff,transfertheclothtojarB. Stiragain,andagainremovethecloth
withthe glass rod.TransfertheclothtojarCandrinse it intheplainwater.
This willremovemostofthe acid, andyou may now safely touchthecloth
withyourfingers.Holdit undercoldrunningwaterfor a fewminutesandthen
spreaditoutto dry.
