You will observe: Yeast cells with small "buds" growing from them.
Some will grow as you watch them. Chainsofbuds willappearright before
your eyes.

Yeast is a plantwhose body consists of only one cell. When there is
sufficient food (the molasses in this case), each yeastplantwill grow to its full
size. Thennew little yeast cells will grow from the fully grown cell. The new
small cell is called a"bud." Sometimes it remainsattachedto theparentcell,
anditself produces buds. On theotherhand,it maybreakoff from theparent
cell,butit will stillproducebuds of its own.
Withonly oneparentyeastplant,you have grown new yeast plants. The
meansofreproductionyou have observed is called"budding."


PRODUCING SPORES FROM BREAD MOULD
Materials:Halfa sliceofwhite bread, a pintjarwith a cover, tap water,
dustfrom a window sill, a pair of tweezers.
Follow this procedure:Thoroughlywet the piece of bread. Putit in the
jar. Sprinklesomeduston the surface of the moist bread. Screw the lid on
thejarand set it in a warm place for several days.
When "mould" appears, use the tweezers to transfersome ofthe grey
fuzzandblack spots from the bread to adropofwater in the middleofa glass
