1 What are Children’s Rights?

In this activity, you will:
Define what rightsmean and what children’s rightsmean

Facilitator’s notes:

In this activity you will help to define, with participants, what rightsand children’s rightsare.
These definitions will be used to underpin all further sections on the support and protection of
orphans and vulnerable children.

For this activity you will need:
 Flipchart and markers
 Copies of Handout 1

To facilitate this activity:

1 Ask participants to give their ideas as to the meaning
of a rightand a childand allow some discussion on
this. You can write up responses on the flipchart.

2 Give out copies of Handout 1 and review all the points
on the list. Allow for some discussion on these points.
For example, you can ask participants if they agree that
children have certain rights that not even parents can
violate.

3 Ask participants to give some examples of the rights that
children have, as a warm-up for the next activity.

The following are definitions of children and rights:
A childis defined as a human, male or female, aged 18 or under.

A rightis what any person, child or adult, is entitled to legally
and morally.

The rights ofallchildren are enshrined in law and must not be violated. When there
is violation of the rights of children, legal action can and should be taken.

Nobody, not even parents, can violate the rights of a child.
