Center of the framework: environment

The center of the child welfare coaching framework is a strengths-
based learning organization. In this environment, learners feel
challenged and supported to try new skills and techniques while
feeling safe enough to be vulnerable and to receive direct feedback
on skills.

A safe environment that allows for change to occur does not
necessarily mean comfortable; in fact, change may be highly
uncomfortable (Whitworth, Kimsey-House, Kimsey-House, &
Sandahl, 2007). All parties must come to grips with the notion that
coaching leads to change, and change is uncomfortable. A trusting,
secure work environment allows learners to work through feelings
of discomfort and embrace change. For tips and tools for creating a
