- Runway protection zone:
The FAA requires the establishment of runway protection zones (RPZs) at the end of the
runways. The runway protection zone is an area beneath the approach surface of the
runway, at a location 200 ft beyond the end of the runway where the primary surface ends,
to the point where the approach surface is 50 ft above the primary surface, as illustrated in
the following figure, the dimensions appear in Table 6-16 from the FAA.
Dimensions of the departure (TO) runway protection zone are dependent on aircraft size and
approach category.
