7.3 Taxiways and Taxilanes


Taxiways are defined as paths on the airfield surface, which are intended to provide a
linkage between the parts of the airfield. A taxilane is a portion of the aircraft parking area
used for access between the taxiways and the aircraft parking position. This section
presents the design standards for taxiways and taxilanes. It provides the recommended
layouts to enhance safe and efficient taxiing by airplanes while minimizing excess
pavement.


Further than the airplane design group (ADG) which is based on wingspan and tail height,
the design of pavement fillets must consider the dimensions of the aircraft undercarriage.
Thus, the FAA established the taxiway design group (TDG), based on the overall main
gear width (MGW) and the cockpit to main gear distance (CMG). Both dimensions were
specified in Chapter 6, Table 6-5.
