7.4.2 Location of Exit Taxiways

The location of exit taxiways depends on runway length, the mix of aircraft, the approach and
touchdown speeds, the point of touchdown, the exit speed, and the rate of deceleration, which in turn
depends on the condition of the pavement surface, that is, dry or wet.

Assumptions:
1 - The average deceleration of air-carrier aircraft on the runway is about 5ft^2 /s ( 1 .5m^2 /s).
2 - A high-speed exit accommodates aircraft exiting the runway at an exit speed of 60 mph
(26.8m/s).
3 - Temperature increases the exit distance by 1.5 percent for each 10o F (12 Co) above 59 Fo
(15 Co).
4 - To accommodate the average mix of aircraft on runways longer than 7000 ft (2130 m)
intermediate exits should be located at intervals of about 1500 ft (457 m) as recurred in FAA.
