Palestine International Airport (Al-Auja)

(Noor Al-Dian Rabaya) #1

CHAPTER 1 introduction

1.1 Background of the project

Flying has always been a human desire since they observed birds. The dream of flying is
limitless and endless. Everything started in the early 20th century with the discovery of the
airplane by the Wright brothers. In 1903 they operated the first powered, sustained and
controlled airplane flight; they were the pioneers of aviation.

The transportation system is a fundamental and necessary component of the economy of
any country. Even though there are a variety of transportation modes, such as automobiles,
trucks, ships, and railroads, perhaps no other mode has a significant impact on intercity
trade and commerce other than aviation.

It is universally known that freedom of movement is a human right, but this is different for
Palestine. Palestine is one of the rare countries in the world that do not have currently any
airport within its borders. Therefore, the only way to reach destinations outside Palestine
is Jordan, Egypt, or the Israeli occupation. Moreover, movement between the isolated Gaza
Strip and West Bank is extremely difficult, travelling through Jordan is becoming more
restrictive year by year, and the border with Egypt is rarely open and has a long waiting
list. Therefore, it deserves to consider planning for establishing an airport in Palestine.
