4.4 Denver International Airport

Denver Airport is an international airport in the Western United States. It has one of the
most efficient runway layouts in the United States, with six, non-intersecting runways.

• Five runways measure 12,000 feet in length.


• One runway (16R/34L) measures 16,000 feet – more than three miles long.

o This is the longest commercial runway in North America

o Because of Denver’s high elevation and summer heat, this extra length often is

needed for departures

The rotating, fan-shaped design allows for optimal take-off into and against the wind from
different directions, depending on weather and traffic patterns.
