Scot comeback a run short in district final with Bulldogs

Brett Bremer
Sports Editor
Caledonia put together a
five-run rally to make things
interesting, but couldn’t get
the last hit it needed to come
all the way back in the

Division 1 District Final at
Byron Center Saturday.
The host Bulldogs held on
for a 7-6 win to earn the dis-
trict championship.
The Bulldogs scored four
times in the top of the first

inning, and then added three
runs in the top of the fourth
to lead 7-1 heading into the
bottom of the fifth, when the
Caledonia offense finally got
going.
Nikolas Clark, Aidan
Grinstead and Clayton Senti
put together consecutive sin-
gles to start the bottom of the
fifth inning for the Scots.
Clark started the rally, stole
second and came home on
Grinstead’s single. A Bulldog
error allowed Grinstead to
score. Camden Raffler
walked to put runners on the
corners with one out for
Caledonia, and Austin Deller
delivered an RBI single into
right field that plated Senti
and sent Raffler to second. A
walk by Keaton Hernden
then loaded the bases.
Ryan Brown delivered a
two-run double that got the
Scots within 7-6 with run-
ners at second and third, but
the Bulldogs managed to get
Clark to ground out in his
second at-bat of the inning.
Caledonia got runners on
first and second with one out
in the bottom of the sixth, but
a pair of flouts to center field
left the Scots still down a
run. Bulldog reliever Jack
Crittendon, who took over
for starter Jackson Steensma
in the middle of the Scots’
fifth-inning rally, put the
Scots down 1-2-3 in the sev-
enth to end it.
Brown had a big game to
end the season for the Scots,
going 3-for-5 at the plate
with two RBI. Senti singled
twice. Canyen Veldhouse
had a double. The Scots also
got a single from Caden
Dixon in the game. Dixon
brought home the Scots’ first
run with an RBI single in the
bottom of the second.
Veldhouse started and
took the loss for the Scots.
He struck out three Bulldogs
in 3.2 innings, giving up
seven hits and no walks. Of
the seven runs against him,
five were unearned as the
Scots made five errors in the
contest.
Nate Weiber led the
Bulldog offense, going 2-for-
4 with a triple, three RBI and

a run scored. Will Baker in
the lead-off spot for the
Bulldogs also was 2-for-
with a triple, a RBI and a run
scored.
The Scots got to the dis-
trict final with a 14-2 win
over East Kentwood in the
district semifinals Saturday.
Senti was 3-for-4 with a
run and two RBI in the win
over the Falcons. Brown was
2-for-4 with five RBI and
two runs scored. Grinstead
was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Deller was 2-for-4 with a run
and a RBI. The Scots also
got hits from Clark, Joseph
Coble, Raffler, Dixon and
Drew Klomparens.
Nicholas Bender got the
pitching win, striking out
four and walking three in
four innings. He allowed two
hits and the only run against
him was unearned. The
Falcons managed another
unearned run against Scot
reliever Michael Geelhoed
who threw two hitless

innings of relief. Geelhoed
struck out two and didn’t
walk a batter.
Bryon Center earned its
spot in the district final with
a 10-0 semifinal win over
Wyoming Saturday morning.
The Bulldogs advanced to
the Division 1 Regional
Semifinals Tuesday where
they were downed 3-0 by
Hudsonville.

South Christian overcomes

Trojan team’s early offense
Brett Bremer

It was the start the Trojans
wanted, but not the conclu-
sion Saturday in Wayland.
The Thornapple Kellogg
varsity baseball team took a
2-0 lead in the top of the first
inning of its Division 2
District Semifinal with OK
Gold Conference foe South
Christian.
The Sailors scored a run in
the bottom half of the inning,
pulled even in the third and
the pulled away with three
runs in the bottom of the
fourth and two more in the
fifth.
Alex Bonnema led off the
ballgame for TK with a walk
and went to third on a double
into center by teammate
Reese Garbrecht. Levi
VanderHeide moved them
each up a base with a ground
ball to the right side, and then
Garbrecht scored the second
run on a passed ball. A dou-
ble play ended the Trojan
threat and South Christian
pitchers would strike out 15
Trojans over the next six
innings while shutting out
TK the rest of the way.
VanderHeide took the loss
on the mound for TK. He
went the full six innings,
striking out five. He allowed
five earned runs on ten hits.
He didn’t walk a batter.
Kaiden Pratt doubled for
TK and Eric Dipert and Alex
Bonnema singled the rest of
the way.
South Christian went on to
win the district champion-
ship. They bested Wayland
13-3 in six innings in the

district final. Wayland started
the day with a 9-0 win over
West Michigan Aviation
Academy.
The Sailors moved on to
the regional semifinals
Wednesday where they
scored a 4-1 win over Olivet.
They will now face Marshall
in the Division 2 Regional
Final in Coldwater today
(June 12). The winner of that
ballgame will take on either
Grand Rapids Christian or
Stevensville Lakeshore in a

Division 2 State Quarterfinal
ballgame this afternoon in
Coldwater, with the winner
advancing to next weekend’s
state semifinals at Michigan
State University.

Big early inning powers

Falcons over Scot softball
East Kentwood knocked
off Caledonia 12-7 n the
Division 1 District Semifinals
in Bryon Center Saturday
and went on to the district
championship.
The Falcons exploded for
nine runs in the bottom of the
second inning of their ball-
game with the Fighting
Scots, wiping out an early
4-0 Caledonia lead.
McKenzie Moore got the
Scots off to a good start. She
singled to center to lead-off
the ballgame, took second on
an error, third on a wild pitch
and then scored on a ground
out by teammate Abby Samp.
The Scots would add three
runs in the top of the second

inning. A walk by Carlie
Tanner and a double from
Taylor Elsenbroek started
that Caledonia rally. Kayla
Bisterfeldt brought home
Tanner from third with a sac-
rifice fly. Kacy Heaton fol-
lowed with a single into left
that plated Elsenbroek to
third. A triple by Katie Clarey
cleared the bases, pushing
her team to a 4-0 edge.
The Falcons pulled to
within 4-2 in the bottom of
the second, then took off
with two out in the inning. A
pair of doubles, four singles
and a walk with two out
allowed the Kentwood girls
to score seven more runs
before the Scots got out of

the inning.
The Scots within 9-6 with
a pair of runs in the top of the
fourth, but the teams traded
runs the rest of the way.
Clarey ended the ballgame
2-for-3 with three RBI.
Heaton had two hits as well,
and scored two runs for the
Scots. Moore, Samp, Ellie
Thelen, Tanner, Elsenbroek
and Bisterfeldt had one hit
each.
East Kentwood went on to
a 9-6 win over Gull Lake in
the district final to earn a spot
in this weekend’s regional
round of the state tourna-
ment. Gull Lake beat Byron
Center 3-2 in its district
semifinal match-up Saturday.
