Trysta Hilton didn’t have
the fastest girls in the state to
chase, but she had a state
medal to chase and she
caught it.
Hilton, a Thornapple
Kellogg junior, set a new
personal record in the 300-
mere low hurdles with her
time of 47.82 seconds at the
Division 2 Lower Peninsula
Track and Field Finals
Saturday in Zeeland. She
was in the second of three
heats in the event, with the
third heat filled with the fast-
est seeded girls in the race.
Hilton was second in her
heat, behind only South
Christian freshman Mallory
Huttenga, and then watched
as only three of the eight
girls in the final heat were
able to beat their times.
Huttenga placed fourth and
Hilton fifth.
Allegan senior Hannah
Antkoviak won the race in
44.69 seconds, having
already won the state cham-
pionship in the 100-meter
hurdles earlier in the day
with a time of 14.94.
“She has been improving
all year,” TK girls’ coach
Maggie Wilkinson said of
Hilton. “Her practice work-
outs were right on target
coming into this state meet.
She is an amazing athlete.”
Hilton was one of a hand-
ful of Thornapple Kellogg
student-athletes competing
in Zeeland Saturday.
TK senior Paige Zellmer
got over the bar at 9 feet 3
inches in the girls’ pole vault,
but got stuck at 9-9. The final
medalists in the girls’ event
cleared 9-9.
Also in the field, TK had
sophomore Alana Compton
competing in the girls’ dis-
cus. Her best throw Saturday
was 99-10.
Senior Wyatt Helzer, from
the TK boys’ team, ran in the
200-meter dash while also
joining teammates Jaxon
Sias, Cameron Gavette and
Austin Van Elst in a tenth-
place 4x200-meter relay per-
formance. Helzer was 18th
in the 200 with a time of
23.78. The Trojan relay team
finished its race in 1 minute
33.25 seconds, about seven
tenths of a second behind the
last of the eight state medal-
ist relay teams in the race.

the 3200-meter run with a
time of 11:03.80. Grand
Rapids Christian junior

in 11:01.53 after finishing
second to Squires in the
1600.
