storming off and slamming doors. When
Mom worked late nights or otherwise
didn’t make it home, Lindsay ensured
that we had something for dinner. I
annoyed her, like all little brothers annoy
their sisters, but she never yelled at me,
screamed at me, or made me afraid of
her. In one of my most shameful
moments, I wrestled Lindsay to the
ground for reasons I don’t remember. I
was ten or eleven, which would have
made her about fifteen, and though I
realized then that I’d outgrown her in
terms of strength, I continued to think
there was nothing childlike about her.
She was above it all, the “one true adult
in the house,” as Papaw would say, and
