Hillbilly Elegy

Mamaw’s, and Mom made it clear that
she wanted me to attend school in
Dayton. I liked my life in Middletown—
I wanted to attend the high school, I
loved my friends, and although it was a
bit unconventional, I enjoyed splitting
time between Mom’s and Mamaw’s
houses during the week and hanging out
with Dad on the weekends. Importantly, I
could always go to Mamaw’s house if I
needed to, and that made all the
difference. I remembered life when I
didn’t have that safety valve, and I didn’t
