on p. 47), I have allowed it to remain in this volume because of current
interest in the problem. Sam Loyd gave the same problem in the first issue of
Our Puzzle Magazine, which he edited in 1907, the pages of which later be-
came the pages of his posthumously published Cyclopedia of P1fzzles (1914).
This is the earliest appearance of the problem I have been able to trace. If
Loyd took it from Dudeney, then Dudeney must have published it in a maga-
zine or newspaper before 1907.-M. G.]
