[Victor Meally found many ways to solve this problem with as few as five
pieces. Can the reader discover a five-piece pattern on which the total length
of the cuts is as low as 16 units?-M. G.]

Cut out the piece A, and inset it again after having given it a quarter tum
in a clockwise direction, and the chessboard will be formed.
