get seventeen squares. So, you see,
everything depends on how the lines
are drawn. Remember there must be
exactly one hundred squares-neither
more nor fewer.

Perhaps the reader can discover
Mr. Grindle's correct answer. You
see, in the case of three sides the tri-
angle can only enclose one area, but
with four sides it is quite different.
For example, it is obvious that the
area of Diagram A is greater than
that of B, though the sides are the
same.
