(a bug). My father had no idea how much those words have haunted
my life. These days I only speak German inside my own head, even
when I’m in Germany. I’ve entirely lost my confidence about it.


Another thing I felt my parents did not understand, was my love for root
vegetables. It all started when my mother bought some carrots from
the farmers’ market next to the meadow. She had heard about the
amazing benefits of carrots, so she juiced them and she would give us
carrot juice any time we asked. I kept coming back for more, and in no
time, I had finished the juice of 45 carrots. Mother went to another
farmers’ market, the one by the babbling brook, and got some more.
But I ate the carrots before she could grind them into juice, and she
got really cross. She said she never wanted to see another carrot
again. I felt the opposite, I wanted to see carrots, big carrots, big time.
