Aspergillus

The Aspergillus fungus is found in the soil, in plant re-

mains and in all environments, including the air. More than

285 species are included in this genus. A number of them

have been reported to cause opportunistic infections in

humans and animals, as well as being pathogens relevant

to plants and of the products produced by them. Other

species are important in the preparation of alcoholic be-

verages, in the production of cheeses, in the preparation

of medicines for the treatment of diseases, in the produc-

tion of citric acid and of enzymes for use in industry. When

grown in the laboratory its growth is fast and pulverulent,

producing colonies with varied colours according to each

species. There are reports of Aspergillus species being

efficient in the production of compounds with biological

activity for the control of pests and degradation of toxic

substances in the environment.

O fungo Aspergillus é encontrado no solo, em restos de

plantas e em todos os ambientes, inclusive no ar. In-

cluem-se neste gênero mais de 285 espécies. Inúmeras

delas já foram relatadas causando infecções oportunis-

tas no homem e nos animais, além de serem agentes

patogênicos relevantes em plantas e dos produtos pro-

duzidos por elas. Outras espécies são importantes no

preparo de bebidas alcoólicas, na produção de queijos,

no preparo de medicamentos para tratamento de doen-

ças, na produção de ácido cítrico e de enzimas para a

indústria. Quando cultivado em laboratório seu cresci-

mento é rápido e pulverulento, produzindo colônias de

cores variadas de acordo com a espécie. Há relatos de

espécies de Aspergillus serem eficientes na produção de

compostos com atividade biológica para o controle de

pragas e degradação de substâncias tóxicas no ambien-

te.
