sponseswhichdonotrequireThelpandwhicharesupportedinpartbylipopoly-
saccharides(LPS).PurecarbohydratesdonotinduceThelp!Short-livedIgMresponses
cancontrolbacteriainthebloodeffectively,butareusuallyinsufficientinthe
controloftoxins.Insuchcases,immunoglobulinsoftheIgGclassaremoreefficient,
asaresultoftheirlongerhalf-lifeandgreaterfacilityfordiffusingintotissues.
IntracellularbacteriaarecontrolledbyTcells(mainlyviaTcellsecretedIFNcand
TNFawhichactivatemacrophages),orinsomecasesbythereleaseofintracellular
bacteriathroughCD8+Tcellmediatedcellulardestruction.
