MHCclassImoleculesentirely—orinsomecasestumorsselectivelydown-
modulatetheonlyMHCallelecapableofpresentingaspecifictumor-asso-
ciatedpeptide(e.g.,thecolonadenocarcinomas).Othertumorsside-stepim-
munedefensesbydown-regulatingtumor-specificantigens.
&Theimmuneresponsemayfailiftumordifferentiationantigensareex-
pressed,againstwhichthehostexhibitsanimmunologicaltolerance(e.g.,
carcinoembryonicantigen[CEA],T-cellleukemiaantigen).
&Blockadeofthereticuloendothelialsystemmayencouragethedevelop-
mentoflymphohematopoietictumors.Forinstance,chronicparasiticinfec-
tionsorinfectionbymalariacanresultinthedevelopmentofBurkittlym-
phoma,aB-cellmalignancy.

wherebysurplusantigen-antibodycomplexesaredepositedonbasement
membranes,resultingindevelopmentofchronicdiseaseviacomplement
activationandinflammatoryreactions;TypeIV:cellularimmunopathology
resultingfromexcessiveT-cellresponsesagainstinfectionsthatotherwise
exhibitlowcytopathogenicity,oragainstallogenicorgantransplants. &
