Someclinicallyimportantautoantibodiesaredirectedagainsthormonere-
ceptors,forexamplethyrotoxicosisinBasedow’sdiseaseiscausedbyauto-
antibodiesthatstimulatetheTSHreceptor,andmyastheniagravisiscaused
byblockageoftheacetylcholinereceptorbyspecificautoantibodies.Other
antibody-induceddiseasesmediatedbyantibodies,directedagainsthor-
monesandothercellularselfantigens,includeHashimotothyroiditis(in-
ducedbyanti-thyroglobulinandanti-mitochondrialautoantibodies),perni-
ciousanemia(anti-intrinsicfactor),pemphigusvulgaris(anti-desmosome)
Guillain-Barre ́syndrome(ascendingparalysiscausedbyspecificmyelinauto-
antibodies),andscleroderma(involvinganti-collagenantibodies).Other
immunopathologiesinvolvingautoantibodiesincludetransplantrejection
asaresultofendothelialdamage(especiallyinxenogeneictransplants),
andtumorrejectioncausedbyantibodiesagainsttumor-associatedantigens
presentonneoplasticcells(especiallyrelevantforlymphohematopoietic
