whatturnstheregulatorproteinintoanactiverepressor.

Asingleregulatorproteincanalsoactivateorrepressseveralgenesnot
integratedinanoperon,i.e.,atvariouslocationsontheDNA.Suchfunctional
genegroupsarecalledregulons.Alternativesigmafactors(seep. 16 8)may
beinvolvedinthetranscriptionalactivationofspecialgeneswithspecialpro-
moters.Physiologicalcellstatusdetermineswhetherornotthesealternative
factorsareproduced.

dividualgenesaswellasrecombinationprocessesresultinginnewgenesor
geneticcombinations.Basedonthemolecularmechanismsinvolved,bacte-
rialrecombinationsareclassifiedashomologous,site-specific,andtranspo-
sitional.Thelattertwoinparticularreflectthehighlevelofmobilityofmany
genesandhavemadeessentialcontributionstotheevolutionofbacteria.
Althoughsexualheredityisunknowninbacteria,theydomakeuseofthe
mechanismsofintercellulartransferofgenomicmaterialknownasparasex-
ualprocesses.TransformationdesignatestransferofDNAthatisessentially
