demonstratethatchangesinthecharacteristicsofbacterialpopulations
weretheresultsofrare,randommutationsinthegenesofindividualcells,
whichthenwereselected.Suchmutationsmayinvolvesubstitutionofasin-
glenucleotide,frame-shifts,deletions,inversions,orinsertions.Thefre-
quencyofmutationsisexpressedasthemutationrate,whichisdefined
astheprobabilityofmutationpergenepercelldivision.Theratevariesde-
pendingonthegeneinvolvedandisapproximately 10 –6to 10 –1^0 .Mutation
ratesmayincreasedrasticallyduetomutagenicfactorssuchasradioactivity,
UVradiation,alkylatingchemicals,etc.
