targetDNA.OnlyasinglesequenceofafewnucleotidesoftheintegratedDNA
needstobehomologouswiththerecombinationsiteonthetargetDNA.The
integrationofbacteriophagegenomesisanexampleofwhatthisprocessfa-
cilitates(p. 1 84f.)Integrationofseveraldeterminantsofantibioticresistance
inoneintegroncanalsoutilizethisprocess(Fig.3. 19 ).Resistanceintegrons
maybeintegratedintransposableDNA.
Transposition.Thetranspositionprocessdoesnotrequirethedonorandtar-
getDNAtobehomologous.DNAsequencescaneitherbetransposedtoadif-
ferentlocusonthesamemoleculeortoadifferentreplicon.Justasinsite-
specificrecombination,transpositionhasalwaysplayedamajorroleinthe
evolutionofmulti-resistanceplasmids(seeFig.3. 23 ,p. 17 6).
