Materialfromtherespiratorytract:
— Swabsmearfromtonsils.
— Sinusflushingfluid.
— Pulmonarysecretion.Expectoratedsputumisusuallycontaminatedwith
salivaandthefloraoftheoropharynx.Sincethesecontaminationsinclude
pathogensthatmaycauseinfectionsofthelowerrespiratorytractorgans,
thevalueofpositivefindingswouldbelimited.Thematerialcanbecon-
sideredunsuitablefordiagnostictestingifmorethan 25 oralepitheliaare
presentperviewingframeat 100 !magnification.Morningsputumfrom
flushingthemouthorafterinductionwillresultinsuitablesamples.Spu-
tumisnotanalyzedforanaerobes.
— Usefulalternativestoexpectoratedsputumincludebronchoscopically
sampledbronchialsecretion,flushingfluidfrombronchoalveolarlavage
(BAL),transtrachealaspirateorapulmonarypuncturebiopsy.Thesetypes
ofmaterialarerequiredifananaerobeinfectionissuspected.Thematerial
mustthenbetransportedinspecialanaerobetransportcontainers.
