proteinases,DNases,lecithinases,andhyaluronidase,allofwhichdestroytis-
suestructures,resultinginaccumulationsoftoxicmetabolites.
Pathogenesisandclinicalpicture.Duetotheubiquitouspresenceofclostri-
dia,theyfrequentlycontaminateopenwounds,oftentogetherwithothermi-
croorganisms.Detectionofclostridiainawoundisthereforenoindicationof
aclostridialinfection.Theseinfectionsdevelopwhenalowtissueredoxpo-
tentialmakesanaerobereproductionpossible,resultingintissuenecrosis.
Twosuchinfectionsofdifferingseverityaredescribedbelow:
&Anaerobiccellulitis.Infectionrestrictedtothefascialspacesthatdoesnot
affectmusculature.Gasformationintissuescausesacracking,poppingsen-
sationundertheskinknownascrepitus.Thereisnotoxemia.
