diphtheria.Infectionsourcesincludeinfectedpersonsandcarriers(rare).
Thediseaseisusuallytransmittedbydropletinfection,orlessfrequentlyin-
directlyviacontaminatedobjects.Theincubationperiodistwotofivedays.
IncidencelevelsincentralEuropearelow.From 1975 to 198 4,only 113 cases
werereportedinGermany.Incidencelevelsarehigherinothercountries
(Russia).Protectiveimmunizationwithdiphtheriatoxoidisthemostimpor-
tantpreventivemeasure(seeTable 1. 13 ,p.33).Exposureprophylaxisinvolves
isolationofinfectedpersonsuntiltwoculturesfromspecimenstakenatleast
24 hoursapartarenegative.
