Morphologyandculture.Mycobacteriumleprae(Hansen, 187 3)isthecausa-
tivepathogenofleprosy.Inmorphologicalterms,theseacid-fastrodsare
identicaltotuberculosisbacteria.Theydiffer,however,inthattheycannot
begrownonnutrientmediumsorincellcultures.
Pathogenesis.ThepathomechanismsofLBareidenticaltothoseofTB.The
hostorganismattemptstolocalizeandisolateinfectionfocibyforminggran-
ulomas.Leprousgranulomasarehistopathologicallyidenticaltotuberculous
granulomas.Highcountsofleprosybacteriaareoftenfoundinthemacro-
phagesofthegranulomas.
Immunity.Theimmunedefensesmobilizedagainstaleprosyinfectionare
strictlyofthecellulartype.Theleprominskintestcandetectapostinfectional-
lergy.Thistestisnot,however,veryspecific(i.e.,positivereactionsincasesin
