Thepostulatescanbefreelyformulatedasfollows:
&Themicroorganismmustbefoundunderconditionscorrespondingtothe
pathologicalchangesandclinicalcourseofthediseaseinquestion.
&Itmustbepossibletocauseanidentical(human)orsimilar(animal)dis-
easewithpureculturesofthepathogen.
&Thepathogenmustnotoccurwithintheframeworkofotherdiseasesas
an“accidentalparasite.”
Thesepostulatesarestillusedtodaytoconfirmthecauseofaninfectiousdis-
ease.However,thefactthattheseconditionsarenotmetdoesnotnecessarily
excludeacontributiontodiseaseetiologybyapathogenfoundincontext.In
particular,manyinfectionscausedbysubcellularentitiesdonotfulfillthe
postulatesintheirclassicform.

Thefrequencyanddeadlinessofinfectiousdiseasesthroughoutthousandsof
yearsofhumanhistoryhavekeptthematthefocusofmedicalscience.The
developmentofeffectivepreventiveandtherapeuticmeasuresinrecentdec-
adeshasdiminished,andsometimeseliminatedentirely,thegrimepidemics
ofsmallpox,plague,spottedfever,diphtheria,andothersuchcontagions.To-
daywehavespecificdrugtreatmentsformanyinfectiousdiseases.Asaresult
ofthesedevelopments,theattentionofmedicalresearcherswasdivertedto
otherfields:itseemedwehadtamedtheinfectiousdiseases.Recentyears
haveprovedthisassumptionfalse.Previouslyunknownpathogenscausing
newdiseasesarebeingfoundandfamiliarorganismshavedemonstrated
anabilitytoevolvenewformsandreassertthemselves.Theoriginsofthis
reversalaremanyandcomplex:humanbehaviorhaschanged,particularly
intermsofmobilityandnutrition.Furthercontributoryfactorswerethein-
troductionofinvasiveandaggressivemedicaltherapies,neglectofestab-
lishedmethodsofinfectioncontroland,ofcourse,theabilityofpathogens
tomakefulluseoftheirspecificgeneticvariabilitytoadapttochangingcon-
ditions.Theupshotisthatphysiciansinparticular,aswellasothermedical
professionalsandstaff,urgentlyrequireabasicknowledgeofthepathogens
involvedandthegenesisofinfectiousdiseasesiftheyaretorespondeffec-
tivelytothisdynamisminthefieldofinfectiology.Theaimofthistextbookis
toimparttheseessentialstothem.
